A Prayer That We May Shut Up and Take Action

Oh My God,

What word is big enough or small enough or precious enough or heavy enough?
There are no words.
Simply, there are no words.

Thoughts and prayers and solemn speeches will not bring these sweethearts home from school.

Is this true? We the people love guns.
Is this freedom? Choosing active shooter drills and sobbing parents over reasonable boundaries and simple action.
Is this American exceptionalism?

Not one more. Not one more. Not one more we have cried a hundred times before.

Ancient people prayed, “How Long Oh Lord” but they didn’t have a vote.

We can turn swords into plowshares and spears into pruning hooks 10,000 different ways but we are skilled at violence. We deal in death so easily and the profits outpace our humanity.

We are called to so much more. A world where every child goes to bed; safe and warm, beloved and well-fed.

Is that a wildly, impossible dream?

It is not impossible. The NRA isn’t that big and the best stories remind us, Goliath must fall.

It is not impossible. It is actually simple to take steps that pave a new way.

It is not impossible if we take heart and take hands, steady our sights and demand a new way.

May we have the courage to shut up and take action. Amen.

Call congress today and let’s be ready for more.
