A Prayer for January 6, 2021

God of Justice,
God of Power and Presence,

We come to You in grief and shock,
we come in fear and worry,
in anger and in rage at the events of this day.

As they unfold,
we, feeling sick in the deep pit of our stomach,
watch in horror and disbelief
thought in our honest hearts we were wise enough to see this on the horizon.

We watch the very worst of our inhumanity,
our leaders have marshaled
our most deplorable values and the world bears witness.

Our hypocrisy, our failure,
our lip-service to our national creed stands on full display.

They wave flags and shout threats;
these terrorists are home grown,
nurtured and empowered by a drive for empire and ego,
toxic Christianity and white supremacy.

God of Justice let this be a last gasp and the start of a new way.
God of Justice let real accountability and change rain down,
not from the sky, but rather from the power of every living heart demanding a reckoning for real equality.

God of justice forgive us,
call us and empower us to be the people you have created us to be.
God help us be the change.

May it be so.
Amen
