Praying with Mary Magdalene: Remember Her and Do the Same.
A flash of generosity, oil poured out
air filled will fragrance and wisdom and fearless power
the dauntless discipline, anoints the Christ
an outpouring of love,
the work of a lifetime gifted,
abundance in the face of scarcity.
“What kind of woman is this?”
empowered by spirit
bold and complicated
rooted in Love’s eternal plain.
“What cost!”
The men judge and shame
reckless, foolish woman
a life-times savings squandered
a sinner for sure, what’s the point, what’s the strategy,
we could have debated the gift, made a building in your name;
at the very least you should have saved it for your 401K.
Then Jesus rebukes, like a southern Grandma might say,
Bless you hearts,
oh grasping and anxious men!
Sweet Mother God,
gathering the brood
whispering,
“the cost is high and that is okay
Breath deep, dear ones.”
Enlightenment is devotion, not detachment
A higher state, is rooted not aloof
The holy here and now, word and flesh
the tools of basin, heart and towel
The sacred in bread and cup;
tender touch and resilient presence.
That’s all word made flesh really is.
Conscious love poured out, not in-spite of the cost
but because of it,
the cost is holy and unreasonable.
Remember her
not afraid of the fee, the norms, the judgement and shame.
Remember Her,
Conscious love, anointing in life and death
Sealing the hearts connection,
weathering the storms,
resolute in loss, heartbreak and pain,
holding the invisible string.
Remember Her and do the same.
May it be so Amen.
